COADJUVANT DIETARY CHANGES IN THE TREATMENT OF SOME DISEASES

Some dietary changes can be made to aliviate some diseases.
Always inform your physician of your diet , supplements and prescription medicines that you are taking.

ARTHRITIS: Eliminate common food allergens and shift in the types of fat .
Talk to your doctor and request a blood test for food allergies, or the skin test perform by an allergist.
Eliminated all sugar containing foods , high fat foods and as many processed foods as possible.

Some common food allergens are:

  1. Gluten : found in wheat, rye, oats and barley
  2. Red meats
  3. Dairy products : milk, cheese, butter, yogurt, kefir.
  4. Nightshade family foods : peppers , potatoes, tomatoes and eggplant.
    Avoid all citrus fruits for two weeks, drink plenty of filtered water. Fish is a good protein ( herring , mackarel, salmon or tuna).

Broccoli, couliflower, cabbage , onions and garlic are very good antiinflammatory vegetables.

After a week you will feel relief from your arthritis. If this occurs, it means that you are really allergic to some foods. You may begin to reintroduced foods ; one new food every three days, if you feel joint pain again, means that you are allergic to this food and that you can not eat this particular food.
If you do not feel relief in 2 - 3 weeks you may not be a dietary responder. In any case , stay in a healthy diet.

Some supplements that can help with arthritis:
Glucosamin 500 - 1000 mg 3 times a day
Condroitin 400 mg 3 times a day
MSM 500 - 1000 mg 3 times a day
Omega 3 oils 3 - 6 gm / day

High Blood pressure:

Make sure your doctor knows all the prescribed and over the counter medicines.
Lifestyle modifications can reduce blood presure in a significant number of people: changes in diet, low salt intake, weight loss, stop smoking and regular exercise, relief of stress.

The Dietary approaches to Stop Hypertension ( DASH) Eat fruits and vegetables and other nutritious foods rich in potasium, calcium and magnesium. Low fat diet in favor of monounsaturated fats and omega 3 Fatty acids. Salt restriction .

High Cholesterol: More than 200 mg/dl in blood is considered high cholesterol.

To mantain a normal cholesterol, follow the antiaging- antiinflammatory diet:

Eat plenty fruit and vegetables, small portions of whole grains, fish ( prefered wild salmon , mackarel), avoid red meat. Other sources of protein : turkey, chicken, tofu, beans. Good Fats in small quantities : olive oil, avocado, nuts.

Supplements: Consult dosage with your physician

  1. Alpha Lipoic Acid: preventive dosage : 250 - 500 mg / day ; therapeutic dosis : 500 - 1000 mg / day
  2. CoQ10 : 100 - 400 mg / day divided ( higher dosage require physician supervision).
  3. Curcumin : 900 mg 1-2 times daily.
  4. Fish oil : consult dosage with your physician.
  5. Garlic : Kyolic 1000 - 2000 mg / day
  6. Ginger : 300 - 1800 mg in divided dosis throughout the day.
  7. Vitamin E : 400 - 800 IU in divide dosis throughout the day.

Heartburn: Mantain a healthy weight, do not smoke, do not eat fatty and spicy foods, alcohol, coffee or carbonate drinks. Observe if certain foods like citrics, peppermint and chocolate cause the heartburn. Eat smaller meals more often.

Sleep on your left side with the the head of the bed elevated six or more inches.
Try two TBS of yogurt with 1 TSP of cranberry sauce or 2 TSP of cold milk. Eat papaya and artichoke. Try oregano tea 1/2 tsp oregano in one cup of hot water.

Supplements: If heartburn persist regardless of the above.

  1. Digestive enzime Supplements
  2. For patients that do not have gallstones or gallbladder disease there is a product recomended by Life Extention Foundation that is a bile acid - stimulating called Digest RC that contains: Black radish extract, charcoal, cholic acid (ox bile), artichoque extract and peppermint.
  3. Over the counter antiacids: Tagamet , Zantac.
  4. Prescription medicines: Prilosec , Prevasid.

If severe heartburn persist there are medical tests that should be perform (endoscopy) to rule out problems in the esophagus or stomach , like Helicobacter pilori, that causes gastric and duodenal ulcers and if not treated with antibiotics there is a greater risk of developing stomach cancer.

It is important to rule out gallstones or gallbladder disease (test : abdominal sonography).

Improving Memory

The antiinflammatory - antiaging diet will help you improve your memory in conjunction to some supplements and changes in lifestyle like not smoking, regular exercise, mental exercise like memorization of dates, lists, telephone numbers, puzzels, reading, engaging in social and cultural activities . Be certain that you are not anemic and mantain your normal blood pressure. Be certain that your primary doctor is aware of all prescription and not prescription medicines and supplements. Combination of medications, unusual reaction of medications too high or too low doses of medication can result in side effects.
